When Matt Johnston, RCC, became a professional fire fighter in Surrey, the training process shifted his personal identity. Being both a First Responder and a Clinical Counsellor provided new clarity on vicarious trauma and the need for counsellors to be creative in their approach to working with these professions. In this keynote address, Matt will outline the mental health challenges faced by First Responders in Canada, and his own personal experience with losing colleagues to suicide.
Uniquely qualified, Matt will discuss ways counsellors can increase their occupational awareness of the First Responder sub-culture. He will also provide insight into how we can be pro-active in getting First Responders into therapy and giving them the mental health support they need.
