Region 1 Presents:
In partnership with the International Masterson Institute and the International Academy of Behavioral Medicine, Counselling and Psychotherapy
The attachment, neurobiological and object relations perspective of the Masterson Approach to the diagnosis and treatment of the Borderline, Narcissistic and Schizoid Disorders of Self.

Thursday, Friday, Saturday June 07, 08, 09, 2012
Vancouver Island University, Royal Arbutus Room
Nanaimo, BC

The Masterson Approach is a form of psychoanalytic psychotherapy which integrates developmental, attachment, and object relations theory with recent findings in neuro-biological research. It yields a detailed understanding of the different character- structures, and of the most effective ways of treating them, that is, the Masterson Approach allows for a clear method of doing psychotherapy, one which is applied differently with different kinds of clients. The Masterson Approach also includes both shorter-term and more intensive treatment options, depending on the resources of the client. In combination with the various benefits for the client the Masterson Approach also provides the therapist with clarity about how to locate and understand the specific developmental difficulties of the client; effectively track how these difficulties are evident in the course of the therapy; support the making of developmentally sensitive and sound interventions based on the particular intra-psychic structure of the client, and lastly, gauge whether interventions are leading to progress. During the three day program emphasis will be on;
1. The basic developmental and empirically derived concepts of the Masterson Approach.
2. Differential diagnosis of the personality disorders.
3. Treatment of both the clinging and distancing borderline disorders of self.
4. Dealing with severe acting out, feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, suicidality and projective identification.
5. Treating and understanding the manifest, devaluing and closet narcissistic disorders of self.
6. Treating and understanding the pure, pseudo-narcissistic and pseudo-borderline schizoid disorders of self.
7. Trauma in the personality disorders.
