“The truth is that our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy, or unfulfilled. For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start searching for different ways or truer answers.” ~ M. Scott Peck. You may recognize the truth in this quote, yet why is it so hard to remember the potential that our difficult moments hold when we’re in the midst of them? Why, instead of remembering the potential for learning, do we revert back to old patters that do not work? When people find themselves in that difficult life place that actually holds so much opportunity for learning and healing, they may not heal because they do not know how to create the conditions necessary for learning, healing, and growing.
Counselling with Paula would guide you toward mindfully learning and practicing the life skills necessary to get out of habits that perpetuate dis-ease and discontent. It’s about transforming difficult experiences, about moving through them and beyond them in a way that radically accepts the lessons, the opportunities and the healing inherent in them.
Now let’s say that you’re at the point where you not only realize that you’re in the thick of a difficult habit/ life circumstance when you’re in it, but also that you manage to remember how it holds great potential for healing. What now? At this point, healing requires that you cognitively shift into perceiving the life situation from a different, constructive perspective that allows you to try something different and perhaps even to see the interaction of the variables that gave rise to the difficulty. As Einstein famously said: “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” This shift into a new perspective can be very tricky since most ways in which we habitually react tend happen very fast, be very ‘sticky’ and therefore hard to get out of. This is where Paula’s counselling guidance can help shift away from old, unproductive cycles of thinking, feeling and acting, and into new perspectives that may form a stable ground for health, healing and wisdom.
