BCACC Member Workshop
Ethics 360°– Unlocking Ethical Dilemmas
Presented by John Gawthrop, MA, RCC
Most RCCs have taken some form of ethics training or course in their academic background and cited it as part of their applications for BCACC membership.
Such training typically included one or more ethical decision-making models, a review of legal and ethical standards, and the opportunity of applying this knowledge to case scenarios. However, real-life professional practice seldom allows for textbook and linear solutions to complex dilemmas. These dilemmas typically span legal, personal, social, emotional, psychological, and cultural dimensions, and require a more robust and broader perspective to navigate them effectively.
At such times, with no boilerplate, quick answers at hand, even seasoned practitioners can feel stuck, torn, and unsure of the best way forward. What does one do if clinical/peer supervision and/or legal consultations are not available?
It might be time to move our lens back and take a 360-degree view, in order to appreciate and incorporate what we may have overlooked, all along.
What you will learn:
• Diagnostic skills in recognizing and establishing priorities in ethical dilemmas
• An integral, multidimensional perspective on framing such dilemmas
• A practical template for balancing how ethical decisions are made
• [Indirectly] Why accountability is an essential ingredient of true professionalism
